Have you ever heard of gingivitis? Not everyone is familiar with it, but it’s something that you definitely want to avoid. In fact, if you took a look at your toothpaste tube, there’s likely some information on it about it preventing gingivitis.

So what is it, and why do you want to avoid it? Well, we have the answers to those two questions. Let’s take a look at what they are.

What is it?
Gingivitis is an early-stage form of gum disease. It can occur when plaque builds up along your gum line, hardening into what we call tartar. This is essentially a buildup of bacteria that can eat away at your gums and teeth.

When plaque hardens into tartar, it could infect your gums and cause them to swell and get red and tender to the touch. That’s what gingivitis is – inflamed, bleeding gums. And it’s a form of gum disease.

How to avoid it
Now, having gingivitis doesn’t sound like much fun, does it? You’re right – it’s not. But can you avoid it? The answer is yes – and it’s not even that hard.

The best way to avoid gingivitis is to brush twice a day and floss. You have to floss if you want to significantly reduce the possibility of gingivitis from your future. Flossing can remove the debris that can build up into tartar from between your teeth. If you’re serious about avoiding gingivitis, you need to get serious about flossing.

Dr. Roderick S. Cooper and the rest of the team in Tucker, Georgia, are dedicated to helping you have great oral health. If you have more questions, call Bella Dental today at 770-921-9000.

Did you know the gum disease can occur in many stages throughout your lifetime? It is a common disease that is frequently found in many individuals with poor oral health. Typically, numerous symptoms are involved with gum disease. If you are suffering from gum tissue infection, always inspect your smile for common symptoms to determine if treatments from your dentist will be needed.

Never assume just because you’re cleaning your mouth correctly and implementing an effective diet that your teeth and gums are automatically safe. Dental damage can arise at any time and could be linked to an issue that you may not even be thinking about. In the case of gum tissue infection, it can progress over a period of many years, so it is important to spot it as soon as possible. Always be on the lookout for symptoms of gum disease. This can include uncharacteristic inflammation and swelling of your gums. Furthermore, if you frequently brush and floss and have blood visible as well as bleed during eating, it could be the sign of a gum tissue infection.

Common symptoms of gum disease include frequent bouts of halitosis and tooth recession. If it appears as if your gums are pulling back away from your teeth or bad breath continues to occur, it may be linked to an underlying condition such as gum disease. Also, be on the lookout for pus are sores between your teeth and gums, and any issues associated with pain while eating. Furthermore, if you have loose or separating teeth and what appears to be teeth that are extra movable, it could be the result of gum disease.

Is your smile in line for a makeover courtesy of gum disease treatments? Visit Bella Dental today for gum disease treatments to take your oral health to a new standard of greatness. We can be reached by scheduling an appointment with Dr. Roderick S. Cooper and our team at our dentist office in Tucker, Georgia by calling us at 770-921-9000.

Hi, Member of the Bella Dental Services Community,

Most people know that cavities are caused by poor oral hygiene and eating sugary foods. But those aren’t the only contributors.  Did you know about these other four causes of cavities?

1-Deep Tooth Crevices & Enamel Issues
Enamel issues and deep crevices create perfect breeding grounds for bacteria and plaque growth. They also can lead to tooth decay. If you have these problems, you’ll likely need dental sealants – an easy, quick and painless procedure – before your teeth become infected.

2-Dry Mouth Issues
Saliva helps protect your teeth from plaque. But if you have a dry mouth – a side effect from medications, a symptom of diabetes, or a genetic attribute – you’re more likely to suffer from tooth decay. If you have dry mouth, routine visits to the dentist are important for preventing cavities.

3-Tooth Grinding
Many of us grind our teeth without even realizing it. You might do it while you’re stressed or asleep, and many people aren’t even aware of how this can damage their teeth. Grinding your teeth wears down the outer layer of your enamel and leads to decay. However, you can save your teeth with a night guard and Bella Dental Services can help create a custom one for you.

4-Genetics
Many people suffer from tooth decay because of their genes. Not only do you inherit the color of your eyes and hair, but you may also inherit deep tooth crevices and enamel issues. So if you’re prone to cavities, it isn’t always because of something you did (or didn’t) do. Routine dental visits can help protect your teeth and maximize the health of your smile.

Talk to your dentist to make sure you’re protecting your teeth from these common, but lesser-known causes of cavities.

Did you know that saliva plays a crucial role in your oral health care by working to neutralize harmful acids and rinsing away plaque buildup? Yes, it’s true! Thus, it is essential to make sure you have saliva production in your mouth. To assist with saliva production, consider chewing gum after meals.

In order to protect your smile, always looking for new ways to keep your smile safe. This includes brushing your teeth whenever possible. In addition, keeping your mouth clean from harmful acids due to foods will be necessary. However, your teeth are vulnerable after eating, so brushing directly after a meal is not advisable, so alternative cleaning tools will be needed. One highly effective treatment to consider is chewing sugarless gum.

By chewing sugarless gum for a period of roughly 20 minutes after meals, you can effectively help treat and prevent the risks of harmful acids. This is because sugarless gum will help form saliva, which is a natural substance in your body. Saliva is exceptionally effective for neutralizing acids, washing away food and other debris, and providing disease-fighting properties for your smile.

Chewing sugarless gum has also been proven to help promote the formation of saliva to help treat and prevent heartburn. Heartburn arises when stomach acids travel up through your esophagus and into your mouth. When these acids reach your teeth, dental erosion can occur. The saliva will be needed to help neutralize the acids and wash them away to protect your teeth and gums.

Don’t let your smile get left behind without first visiting with us to discuss advanced oral health care treatments. At Bella Dental, the most common piece of guidance we give is to brush your teeth two times daily for two minutes per session. (You probably wouldn’t have guessed that, would you?) Because we’re continually reminding our patients to brush their teeth, we also get a fair number of questions about the correct way to brush teeth. Here are a few of the inquiries we get most often:

Which toothpaste brand should I use?
The right toothpaste is the one that you’ll actually utilize. Ultimately, that’s a partiality. However, there are some differentiators between toothpastes. You should always look for the ADA seal of approval on the packaging; this means the ADA has tested the product with the seal on it and that it’s one you can safely trust. There are also toothpastes that fight specific conditions such as gum disease and tooth sensitivity. Find the toothpaste brand that works greatest for you and makes it most likely that you’ll stick to a healthy brushing routine!

How imperative is the brand of toothbrush that I utilize?
The mission of tooth-brushing is to eliminate plaque, bacteria and food remnants from your oral cavity, so the toothbrush which does that best for you should be your pick. Always utilize a soft-bristled toothbrush since they brush the gaps between teeth without harming gums. Additionally, consider using a smaller-headed toothbrush since larger ones may be more difficult to move inside of your mouth.

Do I need an electric toothbrush?
Electric toothbrushes are great choices for many because the motorized brushing functionality can clean teeth extra successfully. Another advantage of electric brushes is that most of them brush to a timer, so you can be sure you’re putting in your complete brushing time! You should consider an electric toothbrush if either of these advantages sounds good to you or if you have limited dexterity.

When perform I need to replace my toothbrush?
You should be replacing your toothbrush or toothbrush head as soon as it shows wear. For most of us, this is about once a season. Periodontal disease is no laughing matter, so don’t forget to throw away your brush when it gets old. Don’t worry, all brushes go to heaven!

If you have any more questions about brushing your teeth, please come see Dr. Roderick S. Cooper and the staff at Bella Dental in Tucker, Georgia. You may call us at 770-921-9000 to schedule your next appointment now.

Did you know that sugar-free gum can prevent cavities? According to numerous studies done on the subject, chewing sugarless gum after a meal for at least 20 minutes helps prevent cavities. But how? The truth is that the cavity-fighters that allow this to occur are not from the sugarless gum itself, but rather the process it creates inside your mouth.

By chewing sugarless gum, your mouth will be forced to create extra saliva. It is the saliva, not the gum, that actively fights cavities. It’s your mouth’s natural defence! For the same reason that dry mouth symptoms can damage your teeth, gum can help your teeth. Saliva not only washes away harmful bacteria that cause plaque, but it can even neutralize dangerous acids responsible for tooth decay. Chewing regular gum can also promote saliva, but the sugars in the gum feed the very bacteria the saliva is trying to wash away–negating the benefits of gum-chewing. Stick with sugar-free gum with the ADA Seal of Approval to make sure you are getting a product that does what it says it will do–help YOU fight cavities!

Chewing gum has even been shown to combat the effects of heartburn. An occurance not usually associated with oral health, heartburn is caused by acids from the stomach traveling up the esophagus and slowly wearing away these tissues. However if the acids reach your mouth, can also damage your teeth! Sugarless gum can help protect your teeth from the acids and sometimes even prevent heartburn from occurring.

Cooper, please book an appointment to come see us at our dentist office in Tucker, Georgia. We can be reached at 770-921-9000. We are here to help you get the smile of your dreams!

Dr. Roderick S. Cooper and our dental team care about you and your smile, which is why we strongly encourage you to get a cavity treated as soon as it forms in your tooth. This is because if you delay treatment, it can result in root canal therapy or even tooth extraction. When you come in to get it treated, your dentist should be able to repair your tooth with one of the most common dental fillings in the world, which are composite or amalgam dental fillings.

Composite fillings are tooth-colored restorations that can repair your smile all while maintaining its beauty. These fillings are made from ceramic, resin, and plastic and they are generally used for the teeth that are visible in your smile. However, you can still use these fillings to repair teeth in the back of your mouth. Because of recent improvements in the dental industry, the fillings are now strong enough to withstand heavy chewing forces.

Amalgam fillings are silver restorations that are made of copper, silver, mercury, and tin. The mercury binds the fillings together and it gives the fillings the strength and durability they need to tolerate pressure and force from chewing for many years. These fillings are easily placed and they are inexpensive options for repairing the back teeth.

Now that you know all about the two most common dental fillings in Tucker, Georgia, it’s time to call Bella Dental at 770-921-9000 and schedule an appointment for treatment. The sooner you call us, the sooner we can restore your oral health and save your smile. We look forward to helping you!
